With a career deeply rooted in dermatology, he has developed extensive expertise in dermato‑oncology, non‑invasive diagnostics, cutaneous physiopathology, and skin bio‑engineering applied to inflammatory skin diseases. His work focuses particularly on melanoma and pigmented skin lesions, with recognized leadership in early detection through dermoscopy, advanced image‑analysis systems, automated diagnostic tools, and in vivo reflectance confocal microscopy.
He has contributed to numerous Italian and European scientific and educational projects, serving both as Principal Investigator and coordinator. His scientific output includes more than 800 publications, over 600 of which are indexed in the Science Citation Index, along with 40 book chapters and more than 500 abstracts presented at national and international conferences. His research impact is reflected in an H‑index of 50 (Scopus).
