The Missing System: Why Longevity Begins Inside

Vision Talk

Mental Health & Wellbeing

We've mapped the systems that shape how long and how well we live, food, finance, cities, climate, care. But we've overlooked the most foundational system of all: the inner one. Drawing on the world's largest emotional intelligence study (28,000+ adults, 166 countries), Joshua Freedman reveals a hidden crisis beneath the surface: the Emotional Recession, a sustained, measurable decline in the human capacities that make wise decisions, resilient relationships, and meaningful lives possible. As AI reshapes what we do, our emotional world determines who we choose to be. Freedman argues that no policy, innovation, or investment will deliver shared longevity unless we also invest in the inner infrastructure of presence, purpose, and emotional wisdom. A provocation for systems thinkers: every system is only as wise as the people inside it, and all change starts within.
