Yongjie Yon

Technical Officer on Ageing and Health

Dr. Yongjie Yon leads the Ageing and Health programme for WHO/Europe as a Technical Officer in the Policy and Governance for Health Through the Life-Course unit, based in Copenhagen, Denmark. He holds a PhD in Gerontology from the University of Southern California and was a Doctoral Fellow with the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. His research and policy work focuses on healthy ageing, ageism, elder abuse, long-term care, age-friendly environments, and health disparities. He published a landmark study on elder abuse in The Lancet, finding that 1 in 6 older people experience abuse annually. Before joining WHO, he served as a Policy Analyst on ageing policies for the Federal Government of Canada, contributing to national elder abuse awareness campaigns and pension legislation.
