Former Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development

María Susana Muhamad González is a Colombian political scientist, environmentalist, and politician. She served as Colombia's Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development from August 2022 to March 2025, under President Gustavo Petro. She presided over the 2024 United Nations Biodiversity Conference (COP16), held in Cali, Colombia. Her tenure is marked by achieving a 36% reduction in deforestation in 2023, Colombia's ratification of the Escazú Agreement, and a landmark $40 billion fossil fuel transition proposal. Previously she served as Bogotá's Secretary of the Environment and as a city councillor. She holds a degree in Political Science from Universidad de los Andes and a master's in Planning & Management of Sustainable Development from the University of Stellenbosch. She was named to TIME's 2024 Climate 100 list.
